Although you may be willing to put in some elbow grease to fix it up, you will want to know exactly what you are investing in. You should probably avoid buying anything that has foundational issues. And, if there are issues with the major systems like plumbing or electrical you will want to be prepared for those renovations.

And, on top of that, you will want to be sure that you are aware of the necessary renovation needs so that you can budget for the remodel project. Make a list of all the known repair needs and forecast the investment amount it will take to fix them all. Talk to an expert and find out if all of your work will create a large enough return on your investment to justify it.

You will want to be sure that the value of the property after the remodel is greater than the amount you invested initially and will the renovations.
